What Is IIT?
IIT is the acronym for Indian Institute of Technology, which is a government-owned conglomerate in India. There are a total of 23 IITs in India, which are considered the best engineering institutes in the country. The top IITs are located in Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Madras, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Hyderabad, and Goa.
IITs offer various courses such as B.Tech., B.Arch., B.Planning, MSc., etc., but every year lakhs of students appear for an exam called IITJEE, to secure a seat in the B.Tech., i.e., Bachelor Of Technology or Bachelor of Engineering programme.
The top-notch faculty and excellence that have persisted through the years make IITs the absolute dream of every engineering aspirant. Though clearing the entrance exam for these institutes is very challenging, many students still try for years to clear it.
The IITians, or the alumni of IITs, enjoy great packages in Multinational Corporations and are also leading some of the best companies and startups globally.
Entrance Exam For IIT Colleges
The IIT JEE exam is a dreaded but heavily applied-for exam in the engineering world in India. The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam is conducted annually to secure a seat in the engineering programmes of IITs. The two main entrance exams for IIT colleges are:
1. JEE Mains
JEE Mains is an exam conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency) for admission into B.Tech., B.Planning, and B.Arch. courses. It is conducted in a computer-based format across different centres all over India. A good rank in JEE ensures a student’s chance to appear for the second exam, i.e., JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is conducted twice every year, and the score of the better exam is considered. A student need not appear for both exams.
The exam consists of 90 questions, of which 75 need to be answered. 25 questions belong to each subject of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. 4 marks are awarded for each correct answer, while 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
A student who secures a good score in JEE Mains can secure a seat in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs), and other great institutes even if they fail to qualify for JEE Advanced.
2. JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced is considered one of the toughest exams in India and is the main entrance exam for IIT colleges. It is conducted after a 1.5 month gap after JEE Mains. Students who score a rank among the top 2,50,000 students in JEE Mains can appear for this exam. It is considered comparatively tougher than JEE Mains as deep and internal questions are asked to check the students’ core concepts.
A good rank in JEE Advanced is a student’s gateway to IITs. The exam is conducted by one of the IITs every year, and the bar of difficulty is thus set really high. The exam consists of two papers of 3 hours each, and a student needs to answer a total of 54 questions in each paper, 18 from each subject of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Eligibility Criteria For IIT Colleges
The eligibility criteria for JEE Mains include scoring 75% in the 12th Board exams, whereas the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced is that the student should have a rank among the top 2,50,000 in JEE Mains.
There is no age criteria for JEE Mains. A student who has passed 12th Class in 2022, 2023 or will appear for Boards in 2024 is eligible to give JEE Mains 2024.
Colleges After JEE Advanced
The students can get into the following colleges through JEE Advanced:
1. IITs
The Indian Institutes of Technology are the premium institutes that offer admission into their engineering programmes. Some of the top IITs are IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, etc.
2. IISc, Bangalore
The Indian Institute of Science is a reputed institution in India that offers B.Sc., M.Tech., and PhD programmes.
3. IISER
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) offers BS, MS, and other such courses on the basis of the results of JEE Advanced.
4. KIIT
Kalinga Institute of Technology has its own entrance exam but also allows admission into its engineering programmes based on the results of JEE Advanced.
Other Engineering Exams
The difficulty level and the cut-throat competition in the entrance exam for IIT are very high. This makes it difficult for all students to secure seats; thus, there are other national and state-level exams through which students can get a seat at other engineering colleges. Some of these engineering entrance exams are:
1. BITSAT
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test is an engineering entrance exam to get into the Birla Institute of Technology (BITS). There are 3 campuses of BITS, situated in Goa, Pilani, and Hyderabad.
2. COMEDK
The Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka is a state-level entrance exam that students can appear for to secure a seat in engineering colleges in Karnataka.
3. VITEEE
Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is an engineering exam for B.Tech. courses offered by VITs. There are 4 campuses of VIT, located in Vellore, Chennai, Amravati, and Bhopal.
4. SRMJEEE
Sri Ramaswamy Memorial Institute of Science and Technology – Joint Engineering Entrance Examination is an entrance exam to get into SRM University, which has campuses in Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Ghaziabad, Vadapalani, Amravati, Haryana, and Sikkim.
5. MHT-CET
The Maharashtra Common Entrance test is a state-level entrance exam to secure a seat in engineering and pharmacy programmes.
The Final Say
The IIT JEE is a prominent entrance exam for IIT colleges. Lakhs of students appear for this exam every year to fight for nearly 50,000 seats available at different IITs. The exam is conducted in a computer-based format every year and is considered one of the toughest exams that is conducted throughout the world.
