JEE Main Vs. JEE Advanced

JEE Mains is a national level engineering exam that is conducted by the NTA. It consists of two papers:

Paper 1

This exam is conducted for science students to get admission into B.E./B.Tech. programmes at the top IITs, NITs, IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), etc.

Paper 2

This exam is conducted for B.Arch. and B.Planning courses.

JEE Mains is conducted in two sessions, out of which the score of the better exam is considered. A good score in JEE Mains can help students get seats in NITs, IITs, and other private engineering colleges. It is conducted twice a year, and the candidate needs to score well in one exam.

JEE Advanced is the higher-level exam after JEE Mains. It takes place after nearly one month of JEE Mains second session. It is considered comparatively tougher than JEE Mains as questions from the depth of the syllabus are asked. Advanced consists of two papers of 3 hours each.

JEE Mains Age Criteria

There is no age criteria for appearing for JEE Mains. Candidates who have passed Class 12th in 2021, 2022, or are appearing in 2023 can appear for the 2023 JEE Mains exam.

Marks Criteria

To appear for the JEE Mains or to get admitted into any NIT, students must score a minimum of 75% in the Class 12th exams.

JEE Advanced

Candidates must have a minimum score of 75% in their 12th Board exams to appear for JEE Advanced and must have a score among the top 250000 ranks in JEE Mains.

JEE Mains is considered comparatively easier than JEE Advanced, as in JEE Mains, the candidate’s basic knowledge about Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics is checked (if they are applying for B.Tech programmes), while in JEE Advanced, a candidate’s clarity of core concepts is tested.

JEE Mains requires extensive practice of numericals while Advanced requires deep conceptual knowledge of all the topics of a subject. Most of the students try to get admission into IITs by scoring well in JEE Advanced, but are forced to settle for NITs.

However, it must be remembered that the difficulty of any exam depends on the level of preparation of the student. If a student has prepared well, then Mains and Advanced can be passed with flying colours.

JEE Main Vs. JEE Advanced Syllabus

The syllabus for both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced is the same, but the way of asking questions is different. In JEE Mains, numerical and objective-type questions are asked while in JEE Advanced, conceptual questions that render the candidate to probe deeper are asked.

In JEE Mains the marking scheme is fixed, which involves answering 75 questions, with 4 marks for each correct answer, while in Advanced, the marking scheme is not fixed and varies a little, every year.
