The Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main), originally known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), is an Indian computer-based test that is used to determine admission to several technical undergraduate programmes in engineering, architecture, and planning at universities throughout India.

The Joint Entrance Test – Advanced (JEE-Advanced) (formerly known as the Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)) is an academic test held in India each year. 

It is organised by one of the seven zonal IITs (IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati) on a round-robin rotation pattern for JEE-Main qualifying candidates (except for Foreign Candidates) under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). 

Before the advent of UCEED, Online B.S., and Olympiad entries, it was the single prerequisite for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology bachelor’s programmes; however, seats through these new mediums are extremely limited or difficult to complete the course.

Other universities, including the Marine Engineering and Research Institute, the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, the Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST), the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), use JEE-Advanced exam scores as one of the admission criteria.

The following are the major differences between JEE Mains and Advance exams:
