The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE) is organized every year by the Indian Institute of Science(IISc) along with the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), for admission into the postgraduate programmes like M.E., M.Tech, PhD, etc. at IISc and IITs.

GATE: What is it about?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE) is organized to test the undergraduate engineering students for mastery in their specific engineering discipline.
You can pursue an M.Tech. or M.E. from the select prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, or IISC after passing the GATE exam. On the basis of your core subjects and GATE score, you can choose your favorite institutes.
Exam Pattern of GATE
GATE is a computer-based examination, conducted online. The exam comprises two major sections, General Aptitude (GA) and a subject of Candidate’s choice. The duration of the exam is 3 hours, in which the candidate needs to appear a total of 65 questions, 10 from the GA section and 55 from the candidate’s chosen subject speciality.
The paper includes the following three patterns of questions:
1.Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs)
In MCQ type questions, the candidate is provided with four options, out of which one right option is to be selected. For every wrong choice, there is a negative marking of ⅓ marks for a 1 mark question. And a negative marking of ⅔ marks for 2 mark questions.
2.Multiple Select Questions(MSQs)
As the name suggests, MSQ type questions allow you to make multiple selections, out of the 4 options assigned for each question. There is no negative marking for such questions.
3.Numerical Answer Type Questions
In such question types, the candidate is required to key in the answer using a virtual keypad. There is no negative marking for such questions.
Fees Structure of the GATE examination
Female candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PwD category are required to pay a sum of Rs 750 to register themself for the examination during the regular period, while in the extended period the sum increases to Rs 1250.
Candidates belonging to all other categories must pay a sum of Rs 1500 to register themself for the GATE exam during the regular period, and a sum of Rs 2000, if there’s a delay in submission of the fees.
The Gate examination fees could be paid online using the credit/debit card or through UPI & net banking procedure.
GATE Examination: Eligibility Criteria & Scholarship details
Before actually appearing for the exam, it is important that you must check if you are eligible for it or not. Below-mentioned is the eligibility criteria that is required for sitting in the GATE examination.
- There is no age limit.
- Non resident Indians must be in the final year of a four-year engineering bachelor’s degree.
- Candidates who are currently enrolled in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme are eligible.
- Those who have completed any Govt, approved degree programme in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, or arts
Scholarship Details:
To be eligible for the scholarship, a candidate must first be accepted into a programme of one of the central government supported institutes, according to the method that the institutes approve of. Candidates may enquire about the admission procedures and the availability of the Ministry of education scholarship or assistantship from the respective admitting institutions.
About GATE 2023 exam:
The GATE 2023 exam will be conducted on February 4, 5, 11, and 12 this year.
In GATE 2023, General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics will be compulsory sections which include 155 weightage each in total marks in GATE papers. The remaining 75% marks will be given to the subject selected by the student.
